Original 1888 Vintage Map: Limestone County, State of Texas
Published by A. Gast & Co. of St. Louis, in 1888. From the seller: "An original map of the Limestone County, Texas land grant.
Lithograph Sheet size: approx. 44" x 32" This is an outstanding 1888 map of the Limestone County, Texas land grant. Limestone County, encompassing 931 square miles of terrain, is located in Central Texas about thirty miles due east of Waco. Limestone is one of the area’s primary natural resources. Early on, its lands comprised parts of the Haden Edwards and Robert Leftwich empresario, a grant made by the Coahuila and Texas legislature in 1825. Nevertheless, numerous individual settlers, both Mexican and Anglo, claimed land grants in the area prior to 1836. On April 11, 1846, Limestone County was formed from Robertson County, and a week later Springfield was established as the county seat. In 1873, however, when Springfield's courthouse burned and the Houston and Texas Central Railway bypassed the town, an election was ordered and Groesbeck became the county seat. The organization of the county was completed on August 18, 1847. The earliest known inhabitants of the lands later to be considered part of Limestone County were the Tawakoni Indians who were expert hunters and distinguished traders. The Tawakonis, also frequently referred to as the Tehuacana and Waco Indians, had a historically antagonistic relationship with the Apaches and Comanches, and, as such, the Apaches and Comanches frequently raided Tawakoni territory. By the 1820s, however, Mexican and Anglo settlers were wrestling for control over the formerly Tawakoni land. The earliest permanent Anglo settlements were eventually established near the Navasota River in what is now central Limestone County. Indians continued to raid the area, most notably, on May 19, 1836. On that day, a large band of Comanches and Kiowa Indians attacked and killed the majority of Anglo inhabitants at Fort Parker, adjacent to the Navasota River. After the raid further settlement was delayed until a treaty with the Indians was signed in 1844 at the instigation of Sam Houston. Limestone County, dominated by the Southern Democratic Party, also served as a seat of controversy during the American Civil War. In 1861 ninety-eight percent of voters (524 of 534 people) approved of secession, and a number of race-related murders took place there during the 1870s. Gas was discovered in Lincoln County in 1913, and oil in November of 1920."
